The History of Gilera
Gilera is an Italian brand with a long history dating back to before World War I. It was founded by Guiseppe Gilera and began building motorcycles of around 300cc. Over the years, the company expanded into producing motorcycles, mopeds, and scooters. During World War I, Gilera grew significantly and produced motorcycles for the Italian army. This continued again during World War II.
In the 1950s, Gilera gained fame by winning world championships in the 500cc class, especially with their Quattro model. In the 1970s, Gilera was acquired by Piaggio due to the lack of a successor in the management. From that point on, Gilera became an important part of the Piaggio Group.
Gilera in Modern Times
After a temporary break in production, Gilera made a strong comeback in 2001 with the launch of the Gilera 600cc Supersport, with which the brand became world champion in GP racing. Today, Piaggio produces light scooters, mopeds, and sport models under the Gilera name, such as the Gilera Runner, Gilera Citta, Gilera DNA, Gilera Typhoon, and Gilera Derbi.
Gilera Runner: From 50cc to 180cc
The Gilera Runner was introduced in 1997 in both 50cc and 180cc versions. The first model featured a rear drum brake and a basic color scheme. This model was soon replaced by the Gilera Runner SP, which had a new paint job, a rear disc brake, and a slightly slower cylinder.
Various updates followed in the years after, including improvements to the headlight, the addition of a spoiler, and a larger fuel tank for increased range. The battery was moved under the seat to prevent theft. Despite these changes, no major technical improvements were made to the Gilera Runner in the years that followed.
Technical Improvements in the Gilera Runner SP Pro
From 2003 to 2005, the Gilera Runner SP Pro was introduced. This model resembled the previous Runner but featured updates such as red and yellow rims and an improved dashboard. The biggest change was the addition of a new Dell’Orto 17.5mm carburetor, which significantly improved performance.
The 2005 Gilera Runner SP Pro
The successor to the Runner SP Pro, launched in 2005, featured several changes, including a larger front tire for improved handling. The suspension, however, saw little to no change. Customers could choose between a carburetor or injection version with a 50cc cylinder. In addition to the 50cc version, there were also 125cc and 180cc Runner models, with the 50cc version being the most popular in the Netherlands.
