What is a kickstarter?

A kickstarter is a pedal used to kickstart the engine of a moped or motorcycle. The first version of the kickstarter dates back to 1910. Before that, people had to run to start their motorcycles, and cars were started with a hand crank, also known as a "sling." The kickstart pedal is located on the outside of your scooter, usually on the left side.

How does a kickstarter work?

The kickstart pedal is attached to the kickstart shaft/quadrant. The kickstart quadrant converts the motion of your foot into a rotating motion. This movement is then transmitted to the inside of the engine. If the quadrant rotates fast enough, it engages the pinion, which then drives the crankshaft.
