When Should I Replace My Scooter Brakes?

Scooters generally have two types of brakes: the front brake (usually a brake disc) and the rear brake (usually a drum brake). Both systems have the same purpose: to slow down or stop your scooter. It's important to regularly check the brakes and replace them in time to ensure safety.

The Front Brake

If you notice that your scooter takes longer to stop when you pull the lever, this could have several causes, such as:

  • Too little brake fluid in the reservoir
  • Air in the brake line
  • Old brake oil
  • Worn brake pads

The brake pads are equipped with friction material that wears down during braking. It's recommended to replace the brake pads as soon as the friction material is less than 1mm to prevent damage to other brake components.

Note: Only top up the brake fluid when the pistons are fully retracted in the caliper to avoid the pistons not retracting enough due to excess fluid in the system.

If you notice a squealing sound from the brake, check if there is any dirt between the brake disc and the brake pads. If not, the brake pads may be worn out and need replacement.

The Drum Brake

In a drum brake, the force is transmitted via the brake cable to the shoe that presses against the drum. The brake shoes have friction material that wears out with use. The wear is not always even, with the ascending brake shoe wearing out faster than the descending one.
