How Does a Brake Disc Work?

Brake discs are now used on almost all motorized vehicles. They provide significantly more braking power than drum brakes. A brake disc works by using brake pads that press against the disc in the brake caliper, slowing the vehicle down. The principle is similar to a bicycle rim brake, but much more powerful.

Is It Difficult to Replace the Front Brake Disc Yourself?

Replacing the front brake disc is actually quite doable! It’s important that all parts are placed correctly and properly aligned, or else braking performance may be reduced. Below you'll find general instructions for replacing the front brake disc. Keep in mind that the steps may vary depending on the scooter.

Steps to Replace the Front Brake Disc:

  1. Remove the axle nuts and the front axle.
  2. Remove the speedometer cable.
  3. Take out the front wheel with the tire.
  4. Remove the brake disc and take out the disc brake bolts.
  5. Remove the old brake disc and install the new one in the same way.
  6. Re-tighten the disc brake bolts.
  7. Also replace the brake pads.
  8. Put the front wheel and tire back in place.
  9. Reinstall the axle and tighten the bolts.
  10. Replace the brake fluid.

Is It Difficult to Replace the Brake Shoes Yourself?

Replacing the brake shoes is also quite manageable, although the tension springs can be a bit tricky. This can be easily solved with the right tools, such as a spring puller or spring hook. A water pump plier is not recommended, as it can damage the parts. Below are general instructions for replacing the brake shoes. The steps may differ depending on the scooter.

Steps to Replace the Brake Shoes:

  1. Remove the exhaust by loosening the bolts and taking it off.
  2. Remove the fasteners and loosen the nut.
  3. Take off the wheel with the tire from the rear axle.
  4. The brake shoes are now clearly visible.
  5. Remove the brake shoes. This may require some force, so a spring puller can help.
  6. Remove the tension springs to detach the brake shoes.
  7. Place the new brake shoes and attach the tension springs.
  8. Align the brake shoes across from each other and press them back into the drum.
  9. Pay attention to the tension of the springs; a spring puller is also useful here.
  10. Check if the brake shoes are properly aligned.
  11. Reinstall the wheel with the tire.
  12. Reattach the nut and other fasteners.
  13. Reinstall the exhaust with the correct bolts.
