Scooter Security and Locks - M2trading.com

To protect our belongings, we must take appropriate measures. As owners, we often want this ourselves, but in some cases, insurance companies require us to secure our property in a specific way. Otherwise, we may not be insured for our purchased goods or may only have liability insurance without theft coverage. This applies to all vehicles, such as bicycles, mopeds, scooters, motorcycles, and even watercraft like boats and jet skis.

What Security Requirements Do Insurers Set for a Lock?

Insurers impose several requirements on additional locks for bicycles, mopeds, scooters, or motorcycles. One such requirement may be that the lock has an ART classification. The insurance policy may also specify whether a 3-star or 4-star lock is required.

What Does an ART-Classified Lock Mean?

The ART Foundation is a collaboration between well-known institutions such as ANWB, RAI, Bovag, and representatives of various insurance companies. This foundation was established to create clear agreements on securing bicycles, mopeds, and motorcycles. They assign a rating from 1 to 5 stars to classify the security level of locks. You can find this information on the M2trading website or on the ART Foundation's official website.

What Do the ART Class Stars Mean?

The stars indicate the level of security. The more stars, the better the lock protects your scooter or motorcycle:

  • 1 star: Minimal security, also known as carry-away protection.
  • 2 stars: Suitable for bicycles.
  • 3 stars: Suitable for mopeds and light scooters.
  • 4 stars: Suitable for motorcycles on the go.
  • 5 stars: Suitable for motorcycles at home.

As you can see, the more stars a lock has, the better it secures your scooter or motorcycle. This increases its preventive value. The left side of the ART logo shows the number of stars, while the right side displays the registered number of the chain lock.

What Else Should I Consider When Buying a Lock?

Make sure the lock is long enough to secure your scooter to a pole or fence, or consider using a wall or floor anchor. Choose a lock that meets your insurer's requirements, but keep in mind that even locks not certified by the ART Foundation can offer excellent protection. Additionally, check whether the lock has a solid eyelet for attachment and whether some chain locks provide extra protection against breaking or freezing.
