Where does the name "V-belt" come from?

The name "V-belt" comes from the shape of the (drive) belt, which is in the form of a "V". The "V" shape allows the belt to better handle tension and provides a larger contact area. A V-belt is made of various materials to withstand tension, such as rubber, cotton, and steel wire. The rubber is known for its ability to handle bending movements under pressure.

What is a V-belt used for?

The V-belt is used to drive many machines, including washing machines, dryers, and motorized vehicles like your scooter.

Why should I replace a V-belt?

You should keep in mind that a V-belt typically lasts for around 6000 kilometers or until it shows visible signs of wear (see below). If not replaced, not only could the V-belt break, but other components like rollers, the starter motor, or the kickstarter could also break. This can result in higher costs.

How can I check if a V-belt is still in good condition?

You can recognize a worn V-belt if it is cracked, dried out, or frayed, or if it lies too deeply or too high in the pulley, can't be tightened, makes too much noise, is covered in oil, or has a smooth surface.

When should I replace the V-belt?

You should replace the V-belt during a major service. But always check the V-belt for signs of wear during a minor service as well. If you're replacing the V-belt, also check the variator rollers and clutch springs—are they still in good condition? Is the rear pulley still aligned properly?

How do I find out which V-belt I need?

To find out which V-belt you need, check the details on your old V-belt. Look at the circumference, width, and thickness in mm. These can vary in order.

How do I replace a V-belt?

To replace the V-belt, you need to pull apart the clutch discs so that the V-belt lies inside the clutch. You will also need to partially disassemble the variator. Place the V-belt inside the clutch and slide it over the crankshaft against the variator disc. Then, reinstall the variator. The clutch, V-belt, and variator will set themselves correctly.
