What is a compression spring used for?

The function of a compression spring is simple. The compression spring pushes against the rear pulley and ensures that there is always tension on the belt. The ratio between the variator and the compression spring must be properly adjusted. Otherwise, you might experience a dip in performance when releasing the throttle (for example, in a corner). If your scooter no longer performs optimally or if you're in the process of tuning, you may need a new compression spring. The compression spring is located between the clutch and the pulleys at the back of the scooter. By installing a stronger compression spring, the scooter will rev higher.

What is a tension spring used for?

In addition to compression springs, we also sell tension springs. These springs pull the clutch components together. The tighter the tension spring, the more revolutions the clutch has to make before it engages. This means more force is required to make contact with the clutch housing. Tension springs are available in different colors, with each color indicating a specific strength. Tension springs, just like variator rollers, compression springs, and jets, are an important part of tuning the performance of your scooter.

How do I know which springs I need?

It's not easy to say which compression spring and tension spring your scooter needs, as this depends on various factors. The cylinder, exhaust, carburetor, and variator all play a significant role in tuning. Depending on your specific preferences and the performance you want to achieve, you can adjust the pull force of your tension springs and the push force of your compression springs.

Example of the strength of compression springs from the brands Malossi and Polini:

Malossi compression springs:

  • From strong to soft: White 7%, Yellow 15%, Red 30%, Green 60%, Purple 60%, Blue 106%

Polini compression springs:

  • From strong to soft: Plain 20%, Green 35%, Yellow 50%, Blue 100%

The percentage symbol indicates the strength relative to the original compression springs.
