What is a Coil?

The coil is an essential component of your scooter's ignition system. It is responsible for converting low voltage into high voltage, which creates a powerful spark that powers the spark plug. If the spark plug doesn't spark properly, even after replacing it, it's likely that the coil is defective.

A coil contains two windings: a primary and a secondary winding. The coil is connected to the spark plug via a cable, known as the spark plug cable. The spark plug cable is connected to the spark plug cap, which then provides power to the spark plug.

What is a CDI?

The CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) plays a crucial role in your scooter's ignition. It ensures that the spark is delivered at the correct moment. If the CDI is not functioning correctly, the scooter may spark at the wrong time or may not spark at all.

Nowadays, the CDI and coil are often combined into one housing, although this can vary depending on the scooter brand. In 4-stroke scooters, the CDI also ensures that the scooter's speed is limited.

CDI and Speed Limiters

In a 4-stroke scooter, the CDI makes a difference when you, for example, install a different exhaust or increase the jet size. Replacing the CDI is necessary to ensure the scooter functions optimally.

There are various types of CDI’s available, ranging from original versions with speed limiters to imitation variants that limit the speed to, for example, 35 km/h instead of 25 km/h. This can help improve your scooter's performance without making it too fast.

Additionally, there are CDI boxes with a potentiometer that allows you to precisely set the maximum speed. Some CDI's also come with a Euro-limiter, which allows the limiter to be easily turned on or off.

Important Considerations When Choosing a CDI

It is crucial to choose the correct CDI for your scooter. An incorrect CDI can cause your scooter to malfunction or not start at all.
