When Should I Replace a Scooter Chain?
A chain should be replaced if it hangs loose, rattles in turns, or if the chain can be pulled from the rear wheel and regularly needs to be tensioned. The sprockets also wear out with use, which is visible from their shape: pointed or crescent-shaped sprockets need replacing! It is always recommended to replace both the chain and the sprockets at the same time. Regular lubrication and cleaning will extend the lifespan of both the chain and the sprockets.
How Do I Replace a Scooter Chain?
Follow these steps to replace the chain of your scooter:
- First, free the rear wheel of the scooter.
- Remove the chain by loosening the ''link'' (the link with a retaining spring).
- The rear wheel can now be removed. It is recommended to replace the sprocket as well.
- Place the rear wheel back, so it is as close as possible to the front sprocket.
- Replace the front sprocket if necessary.
- Place the new chain.
- Check the size of the chain and determine how many links need to be removed.
- Size the chain by punching it or have a mechanic do it.
- Connect the ends of the chain and adjust it properly.
Note: This is a general guide and the steps may vary depending on the type of scooter!
