Types of Restrictors

The Varioring

The varioring ensures that the V-belt cannot move to a higher gear, thus preventing the scooter from going faster. There are different types of varioring, so make sure you know which one you need for your scooter!

The Exhaust Restrictor

The exhaust restrictor, commonly known as a "plug," is placed in the exhaust and prevents exhaust gases from leaving the exhaust easily. This chokes the cylinder, preventing it from reaching high RPMs.

The RPM Restrictor

The RPM restrictor, as the name suggests, limits the RPM your scooter can reach. Typically, this is set around 8000 RPM. With an unrestricted CDI, the maximum power of your scooter will be unlocked. There are also CDI units that are programmed to limit speed to a specific value, which can be set either as a standard limit or adjusted via a potentiometer or remote control.

More About the CDI

The CDI unit ensures that the spark occurs at the exact right moment, which happens when the piston is at the top dead center. The restrictor delays the spark slightly, meaning it fires after the piston has moved down a bit. This delay is often just a fraction of a second. If the piston is slightly down, there is significantly less compression, causing you to lose much of your power.
